£72m Gambled on FOBT’s in Rochdale

44333444An amazing £72million has been gambled on Bookmakers FOBT machines in just one year in one of the most deprived towns in the North West of England, that being the town of Rochdale.

This mid sized Lancashire town not far from Manchester City Centre, has a modest population of some 205,000 residents, however figures just released show that for each resident of Rochdale a worrying £340 was wagered in just one year on fixed odds betting terminals!

Gambling addiction charities and local councillors are worried about these figures, as the town has some very upsetting figures based on unemployment and poverty levels, and as such this huge amount of cash staked on these machines shows, if nothing else, just how addictive these gaming machines are.

The one aspect of the fixed odds betting terminals which is troublesome is the huge stakes which can be placed on them every 30 seconds, with a maximum stake per spin on the Roulette games, which is just one of the many games available on them, being a huge £100 per spin.

Someone with severe gambling problems or a lack of control could, if they had the available funds therefore gamble upto £18,000 in one hour on the Roulette game alone, even more if they are playing two machines at the same time.

Pressure is being put on the Government to urgently take a look at the way these fixed odds betting terminals work and operate, and it is hoped, however very unlikely, that a reduction in the maximum stake levels permitted per spin could become law, but this would take Government legislation, which as we all know takes a very long time to be set in motion and be finally approved.

Let us hope some action is taken sooner than later as this huge amount of money gambled on these machines can only be hurting and seriously affecting the daily life of those with gambling problems in and around the Rochdale area.
