Michael Osborne, executive director of Harbour Pointe, appeared on KMS on WHFS 105.7 FM in Baltimore, Maryland to discuss gambling addiction. Following the NCAA Men?s Basketball Championship, Mike joined the program to discuss betting on the NCAA and the perils of overall gambling addiction. The FBI estimates that more than $2.5 billion is illegally wagered each year on ?March Madness.?

Michael Osborne, executive director of Harbour Pointe, appeared in studio on The Ed Norris Show on Baltimore ?s 105.7 FM on March 11th. During the segment, Ed and Michael discussed the societal impacts of gambling addiction, as well as the lack of funding for treatment by the State of Maryland . The National Council on Problem Gambling estimated that the social cost of problem gambling from bankruptcy, divorce, job loss & criminal justice costs was $6.7 billion in 2006. While Maryland was the first state to recognize gambling as an addiction in 1978, it is one of only four states that does not offer any financial assistance for treatment programs.
Harbour Pointe is the oldest and premiere residential treatment center in the solely dedicated to treating compulsive gambling. The facility, located in downtown Baltimore , offers a completely voluntary four-week program conducted by a renowned group of psychologists, psychiatrists, behavior specialists and recovering compulsive gamblers. Over the past three years, the profile of the patient treated at Harbour Point has shifted from 35-45 year old males betting at the track to 18-24 year old males gambling on the Internet. However, gambling addiction does not discriminate as Harbour Pointe's patients range from affluent corporate executives to stay at home moms. The Super Bowl is the largest betting day on the U.S. calendar. While roughly $100 million was wagered legally on the NFL?s biggest game, it is estimated that over fifty times that amount was bet illegally. While society is aware of programs that exist for people battling alcohol and drug addiction, Osborne talked about the lesser know options that do exist for compulsive gambling addicts.
